Summit gives full context to challenge of teacher diversity

The AFT, the Albert Shanker Institute and the U.S. Education Department convened with other key stakeholders on May 6 to examine a tough problem that hasn’t budged in more than a decade: the need to attract, prepare and retain a teaching workforce that reflects the racial and ethnic diversity of our nation’s students.

The Washington, D.C., summit was co-sponsored by the AFT and the Shanker Institute, and it drew participation from a full spectrum of organizations and individuals who are grappling with the problem of diversity—administrators at historically black colleges and universities and other minority-serving institutions; resource specialists in several school systems; Teach for America leaders; and teachers of color who have emerged as influential voices.
