TELUS Digital Transforms Iloilo School with Volunteer Power

In the heart of Iloilo, Philippines, a remarkable transformation has taken place at R.G. Hechanova Memorial National High School, where aging facilities once dimmed the prospects of eager students, but now shine with renewed hope thanks to a dedicated initiative. This public institution, long challenged by deteriorating infrastructure, recently became the focus of an inspiring effort driven by over 230 volunteers from TELUS Digital Philippines. As part of the Brigada Eskwela program and TELUS Days of Giving, the effort not only revitalized physical spaces but also addressed the urgent need for digital literacy in today’s tech-driven world. The project stands as a beacon of hope, showing how corporate volunteerism can tackle systemic issues in education, from crumbling classrooms to the digital divide. It’s a story of community spirit and forward-thinking action, where tangible upgrades meet the intangible power of empowerment, setting a new standard for what collaborative efforts can achieve in under-resourced schools. This initiative highlights a growing trend of companies stepping up to make a lasting difference in young lives.

Revitalizing Learning Spaces for a Brighter Future

The physical transformation at R.G. Hechanova Memorial National High School marks a significant milestone in improving educational environments. Volunteers dedicated countless hours to repainting 14 classrooms, seven hallways, and four staircases, breathing new life into spaces that had long been neglected. Additionally, 40 chairs were refurbished, and separate changing rooms for male and female students were constructed, ensuring safer and more comfortable facilities. These enhancements go beyond aesthetics; they signal to students that their learning matters, fostering a sense of pride and focus. A student leader named Lorraine captured the sentiment, expressing deep gratitude for the renewed hope these changes instilled in the school community. Such upgrades address immediate needs while laying the groundwork for better academic engagement. The impact of a conducive learning environment cannot be overstated, as it directly influences students’ ability to thrive. This effort exemplifies how targeted interventions can turn challenges into opportunities for growth and inspiration.

Empowering Students for a Digital Tomorrow

Beyond bricks and mortar, the initiative embraced the critical need to prepare students for a rapidly evolving digital landscape. A TELUS Wise® session engaged 30 students in learning about responsible social media use and safe navigation of AI-powered platforms, equipping them with vital skills for the modern age. Anne Muñoz, country vice president of TELUS Digital Philippines, highlighted the importance of fostering confident, responsible digital citizens through such workshops. This focus on technological empowerment complements the physical upgrades, reflecting a holistic approach to education support. Meanwhile, the broader context of TELUS Digital Philippines’ commitment shines through, with over 100,000 volunteer hours contributed to Brigada Eskwela initiatives nationwide since its early involvement. Rajiv M. Dhand, regional vice president for Asia-Pacific and Africa, noted that enhancing learning environments creates a ripple effect, transforming lives across generations. This dual emphasis on infrastructure and skills ensured that the project left a lasting mark on the Iloilo school community.
